Japanese official: Building disaster-resilient cities is a top priority

Japan considers the construction of disaster-resilient cities and settlements a top priority, Shiomi Hideyuki, Deputy for International Affairs at Japan’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, said during the ministers’ meeting on the New Urban Agenda organized within the framework of the 13th session of the World Urban Forum (WUF13) held in Baku, APA-Economics reports.

According to him, the increasing frequency and destructive nature of natural disasters in recent years have made it necessary to strengthen flood protection, earthquake-resistant construction, and rapid evacuation systems in the country.

Shiomi Hideyuki noted that Japan pays special attention to ensuring safe and accessible housing for the elderly, persons with disabilities, and other vulnerable groups.

He stated that Japan will continue sharing its experience with other countries in the fields of disaster risk reduction, recovery and reconstruction, affordable housing, and sustainable urban planning.

The Japanese official also added that the country will host the international Green Expo 2027 exhibition in Yokohama in 2027.
