Member of Türkiye’s Security Committee: Early opening of Zangezur Corridor is essential amid global crises

Member of the Security and Foreign Policy Committee under the President of Türkiye, Professor Mehmet Akif Kireçci believes that the Zangezur Corridor opening earlier than planned would be beneficial at a time when the US–Iran–Israel war is causing new crises.

Answering questions from APA’s Türkiye bureau, Kireçci stated that countries around the world are facing a major risk of crisis.

In his opinion, in such a situation, Azerbaijan will gain significant strategic importance with its oil and gas resources, and Türkiye as a country that ensures stability in the region.

“Currently, Türkiye is focusing all its attention on turning conflicts that could affect both itself and Azerbaijan into peace. Wars in the region also affect the economy. Countries around the world are facing a major risk of crisis. The situation is also tense in countries such as Japan, the Philippines, Bangladesh, and India. In such a situation, Azerbaijan gains great strategic importance with its oil and gas resources, and Türkiye as a country that ensures stability in the region.

Türkiye is considering alternative routes through both Iraq and other directions. At the same time, it supports the opening of the Zangezur Corridor. Crises are rapidly growing, and this affects global trade and the flow of resources. Therefore, there is a need for multiple transport routes.

I think the Zangezur Corridor can serve peace. It would be beneficial for the Zangezur Corridor to be opened earlier. For this, the cooperation of Azerbaijan and Türkiye alone is not enough; Central Asian countries must also be ready for this process,” he said.
