Georgia launches criminal case against former President Saakashvili and 7 opposition leaders

In Georgia, criminal proceedings have been launched against former President Mikheil Saakashvili and opposition leaders Giorgi Vashadze, Nika Gvaramia, Nika Melia, Zurab Japaridze, Elene Khoshtaria, Mamuka Khazaradze, and Badri Japaridze, Georgia’s Prosecutor General, Giorgi Gvarakidze said during a briefing, APA’s local bureau reports.

He stated that these individuals are accused of calling for the violent overthrow or alteration of the constitutional order and the government of Georgia.

Gvarakidze added that they are also charged with committing acts of sabotage against the state, supporting hostile activities of a foreign country, and financing actions directed against the state.

The Prosecutor General’s Office will apply to the court within the legally established timeframe to impose bail measures on Mamuka Khazaradze and Badri Japaridze, and to schedule preliminary hearings for the other defendants.

The investigation is ongoing. The Prosecutor General’s Office stated that it will periodically inform the public about the progress and results of the case.
