Estonia to ban Russian natural gas imports from 2026

The Government of Estonia has decided that, from 2026, it will implement a complete ban on importing natural gas from Russia, APA reports.

This move is part of a broader sanctions strategy aimed at strengthening the country’s energy independence and coordinating with European partners.

During a government briefing, Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna said that the goal is to ban the import of liquefied natural gas from Russia. He clarified that the amendment would lead to restrictions not only on gas in the distribution network, but also on LNG imported outside this network.

"Currently, it is permitted to purchase and import liquefied natural gas from Russia provided that it is not used in the distribution network. After the amendment comes into effect, the import ban will extend to LNG imported outside the distribution network," Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna noted.
